When my husband and I were kids, we played outside all the time, from the time we got home from school until the street lights came on. Not to sound like a cliche, but those were the good ole days. Our kids on the other hand are very different, they are more content to hang out inside playing games, watching TV and reading (I don’t mind the last one) and sometimes it’s like pulling teeth to get them outside.
During the summer, I succeeded in getting them out a little more with the Nerf guns, but after a few months, they both got bored and I realized it was time to come up with some fresh ideas. I came up with a different main game for each season, and added some traditional games to break up the monotony.
Of course the first one I am thinking of is fall since we are smack dab in it. Off to See the Wizard is a great fall game because, well scarecrows. Head to the park, ones with walking paths are great for this and go on a journey to find the Wizard, have adventures on the way. Watch out for the witch and the flying monkeys!!
Love Frozen? So do my kids, so why not imagine that the playground equipment is Elsa’s icy castle? Belt out a course of Let It Go of course you wanna build a snowman!
Not sure this fits entirely with Spring, but my kids love the idea of training their very own dragon’s! Be vikings on the Island of Berk using the playground equipment again and have a blast with their Toothless!
Time to have a good ole fashion duel with Hook and Smee!! Hide out with the Lost Boys under the playground, while battling Hook on his ship.
You can never go wrong with these oldies but goodies and if your kids don’t know how to play, well time to show them a thing or two:
- Red Rover
- Mother May I
- Red Light Green Light
- Simon Says
- Follow the Leader
- Hide and Seek
- Freeze Tag
- Playground Obstacle Course
- King of the Mountain
- Dodge Ball
- Double Dutch
- Kick Ball
So far, my kids are having a blast with a few of these games, and I admit, I am too!
