There is nothing that we love more than fall in this house, especially because it means that the heat waves are over. But also the smell of yummy baked goods in the air, the oranges and browns of the season and the holidays just around the corner. While I may not be able to enjoy eating many of the delicious dishes that come with this time of year, I sure can enjoy making them for my family and watching their eyes light up.
Apple dishes are always one of their most favorite treats and Homemade Apple Crisp wins by a mile. It is the perfect fall dessert that the whole family loves and who knows, yours might too!
- 4 cups peeled, cored, sliced apples (about 6 apples)
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup oats
- ¾ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¾ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
- ⅓ cup butter, cut into pieces
In a large mixing bowl, toss together the apples with the flour, cornstarch, brown sugar and cinnamon.
Grease 9×9 pan. Add the apple slice mixture in the bottom of the pan. In a smaller bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter using a pastry cutter, or the back of a fork. Combine until the pieces are pea-sized. Alternatively, you can pulse this mixture in a food processor.
Sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture.
Bake 375-degrees F for 30-35 minutes until the crisp topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
